Tips for the Technology-Dependent Traveler

Contact your physician before departure

  1. Evaluate supplemental O2 requirements
  2. Arrange for letter outlying medical condition
  3. Obtain letter documenting O2 requirements and fitness to travel
  4. Arrange for extra medical supplies and medicines
  5. Obtain names of physicians and facilities at destinations and layovers

Contact carrier early (see the seperate page on Airline Oxygen Info)

  1. Nonstop flights are preferable
  2. Arrange for seat near lavatory and for wheelchair
  3. Arrange for portable O2 during layovers and at final destination
  4. Identify medical facilities at terminals and ports of call

Organize travel day

  1. Travel with reliable companion
  2. Carry on all medicines, spacers, letters, advanced directives
  3. Exercise leg muscles periodically
  4. Carry on tape, scissors, extension tubing, and adapters for all equipment
  5. Be well rested, avoid alcohol and sedatives, void prior to boarding
